Charlie Cobb is building his future the same way he approaches most things: by getting started, staying practical and making the most of what is in front of him.
Originally from Chillagoe, outside Cairns, Charlie is now in Year 12 at Tec-NQ and growing his pathway in automotive, with a strong interest in diesel fitting and trucks. He is building experience across multiple workshops, settling into greater independence and stepping into an apprenticeship opportunity that reflects the way he has approached every stage of the journey so far.
What stands out most in Charlie’s story is not only where he is headed. It is the way he is getting there.
Soon after arriving in Townsville, Charlie decided he wanted to start earning for himself. Rather than waiting for something to come up, he walked into Bob Jane with his resume and asked for work. He still works there casually on Saturdays.
“I was sick of asking Mum for money,” he said.
It is an honest line, and it tells you a lot. Charlie wants to stand on his own feet. He is not waiting for confidence to arrive first. He is building it by taking action.
That same mindset runs through his Tec-NQ experience. Charlie is using every opportunity to learn, build capability and work out more clearly what kind of tradesman he wants to become. He has completed multiple placements across truck-focused workshops, and each one has added something.
Recently, that effort has led to a major milestone: signing into an apprenticeship opportunity.
For Charlie, though, the real story is not only the outcome. It is the process of getting there. By his own count, he had completed seven placements before this next step came together. Rather than talking about that as a wait, he talks about it as experience.
“It took me a while,” he said. “But I got to learn different workshops and how they operate.”
Charlie is not looking for a shortcut. He is learning from each workshop, each set of expectations and each different way of doing the job. He is paying attention to what different businesses do well and storing that away for later.
“If I want to start my business, I get a taste of every workshop and learn the ways they do it,” he said.
That long view matters. Charlie is not only chasing the first opportunity. He is already thinking about the bigger picture: how to become adaptable, how to learn broadly and how to build something of his own one day.
Tec-NQ House is playing a big role in that growth as well. Having boarded since Year 7, Charlie says Tec-NQ House is the best boarding school he has attended. What stands out to him most is the trust students are given and the sense that staff want them to do well.
“They have more trust in us,” he said. “They love helping you and just want to watch you succeed.”
For Charlie, that trust translates into real responsibility. It means managing himself, driving to and from work experience, and taking ownership of the opportunities he is given. The support is there, but so is the expectation that students step up. That balance suits him.
The confidence he is building is practical as much as personal. Charlie enjoys solving problems and figuring things out for himself. That is where he gets a sense of momentum.
“I love just sorting it out,” he said. “Especially when I sort it out by myself. I know this now.”
That line captures something important. At Tec-NQ, Charlie is not only learning how to work on vehicles. He is learning how to trust his own ability, build judgement and keep growing through doing.
Family has shaped that mindset too. His older brother is an electrician, his twin brother is completing plumbing at Tec-NQ, and Charlie has become the mechanic in the family. He also looks up to his father, whose broad practical skills on a cattle property have influenced Charlie’s own interest in becoming an all-rounder rather than boxing himself into one narrow speciality.
Right now, Charlie is focused on building from where he is. He wants to keep learning, complete his trade and keep seeing where the work can take him, whether that is Townsville, the mines, back towards home or eventually a business of his own.
That is what makes his story feel alive. Charlie is not standing still. He is backing himself, taking initiative and building independence in real time.
At Tec-NQ, he is not just getting ready for work. He is learning how to create momentum for himself.
