Term 2 of 2025 marked an exciting milestone as Izabel De Buck, a Year 11 P-Tech student at Tec-NQ, officially signed into a school-based electrical apprenticeship with the Port of Townsville.
The Port of Townsville recently advertised an apprenticeship opening on SEEK as part of its commitment to developing a fresh workforce and nurturing future trades professionals to eventually take the reins from its current team. The opportunity was presented to both our Electrical and P-Tech classes, encouraging students to apply.
Among 130 applicants, two Tec-NQ P-Tech students advanced through the competitive interview process—emerging as the top two candidates. Izabel was ultimately selected for the role, securing her place as the newest apprentice with the Port’s electrical maintenance team.
This appointment is particularly significant, as Izabel becomes the first apprentice to join the Port’s maintenance team in two decades—since the last boilermaker apprentice 20 years ago. Her enthusiasm for the trade and eagerness to build her skills stood out throughout the selection process.
Before officially beginning her apprenticeship, Izabel completed two rounds of hands-on work experience with the Port through Tec-NQ, giving her valuable insight into the role and workplace environment. She will now be working closely with the electrical maintenance team to further develop her skills and gain on-the-job experience.
