Eddie Schneekloth is building a new chapter in Townsville, and it is already taking shape.
Originally from Normanton in the Gulf region, Eddie came to Tec-NQ ready for something different. He had lived close to home his whole life, and the move to Townsville gave him the chance to step into a new environment, try boarding for the first time and see what life looked like beyond what he had always known.
It was a big move. Eddie says he was nervous at first. But after a couple of weeks, things started to settle. The routine became familiar, the environment became easier, and by Year 12 he was enjoying the independence that came with living and learning away from home.
That change matters because Eddie’s story is not only about leaving home. It is about what he is building now that he is here.
He says the way students learn at Tec-NQ suits him far better than being in the classroom all day. The work is more practical and connected to the kind of future he wants to build.
“It’s a bit more hands on,” he said. “You get more hands-on experience.”
That shift from classroom learning to practical learning is now feeding directly into his work placement, where he is gaining experience in a boilermaking and heavy fabrication environment. His days are spent around large-scale machinery and components, including dump trucks, excavator buckets, fixed plant and repair work that is physical, demanding and clearly tied to real industry needs.
“It’s hard work, but it’s good,” he said.
That line sounds exactly like Eddie: straightforward, grounded and honest. He is not looking to dress the experience up. He likes the work because it is real, because it challenges him and because he can see what it is building in him.
When asked what the biggest lesson has been since coming to Tec-NQ, his answer is simple.
“Stay humble and work hard.”
That approach runs right through his time at Tec-NQ. Eddie is learning what employers expect, what it means to show effort consistently and how much attitude matters when you are starting out. Through work placement, he is not only building technical capability. He is building work habits, communication and the kind of quiet confidence that comes from proving yourself over time.
That growth is already showing. Eddie talks about gradually doing more for himself on the job and becoming more capable in the workplace. He is learning by doing, and the confidence is coming with it.
The biggest sign of that momentum is clear: Eddie has secured full-time work with his current employer after graduation.
For him, that is one of the things he is most proud of.
“Just getting a good job,” he said. “With good people.”
That outcome reflects exactly what Tec-NQ is designed to do. He is boarding in Townsville, learning in a more practical environment, stepping into real industry experience and turning that experience into a future he can already see.
After Year 12, Eddie plans to stay in Townsville, move into his own place and keep building from there. That next step feels significant because it shows how much has changed since those first nervous weeks of boarding. The fresh start is no longer just an idea. It is becoming a way forward.
He also sees clearly what Tec-NQ gives students alongside trade exposure. In his view, it helps build communication, respect and the habits needed to be ready for work. Students still need to show initiative themselves, but the structure and support are there to help them take the next step well.
Right now, Eddie is not just reflecting on a good opportunity. He is living through one, turning a fresh start into skills, confidence and a job that is already taking him into what comes next.
