Tec-NQ is a not-for-profit organisation providing quality technical education for young people in the Townsville region. Since opening its doors in February 2007, the College has provided education and training for hundreds of young people, and placed them into School-based Apprenticeships with over 200 local employers.
The Tec-NQ is currently in its fourth year of operation and has achieved the following:
- A viable career alternative for young people in Townsville.
- Recruitment services bridging specific trade skills gaps in Townsville by placing hundreds of employees into local businesses in the community in trade’s including automotive, building and construction, boilermaking, plumbing, sheet metal work, tilers, electrical and carpentry.
- A flexible timetable and curriculum in the College that allows industry and students to maximise the value of the employment of school based apprenticeships.
- Pastoral care for “at risk” students to help manage the transition from school to work.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training and mentoring solutions for 26 school-based apprentices with current retention rates operating at 95%.
- Being the key driver behind the growth of school-based apprentices in Townsville over the last two years by contributing approximately 154 School based apprentices or 88% of 2008 growth statistics.
- Securing three weeks of work experience placements across 160 host businesses
- The construction of a strong governance based, industry led VET facility for the future of Townsville’s youth and industry.
