Where can it take me?

As an electrician you could be employed in the manufacturing, mining, mineral, construction, energy and water supply, storage and transport, domestic and commercial electronics service and retail industries. Some electricians work for government organisations, and others work as contractors.

Electricians may work in workshops, in private homes or in manufacturers' factories. They have a great deal of contact with the public, work in confined spaces and have to stand for long periods. They may also have to work at heights on masts, towers and roofs.

After you finish your apprenticeship and gain the relevant practical experience, you may be eligible for an electrician's licence. There are also opportunities for promotions to supervisory, technician, engineering and management positions with experience and further studies.

What can I expect?

Working in the electro-technology industry you can expect to carry out the following tasks:

  • Read electrical, architectural and mechanical diagrams, drawings or specifications to determine job requirements
  • Plan the layout of wiring systems
  • Test for, locate and repair electrical malfunctions
  • Install electrical and electronic control systems and inbsulated cables
  • Install electrical equipment such as storage heaters, water heaters and electric motors
  • Assemble and fabricate electrical and electronic components and appliances
